Expert Nephrology Care for Kids
Pediatric nephrologists provide medical care to children and teenagers with kidney and urinary tract problems. Children and teenagers have unique medical needs that require the specialized care of highly trained pediatric physicians.
Pediatric nephrology involves the diagnosis, treatment, and management of disorders affecting the kidney and urinary tract, including:
- Kidney failure
- High blood pressure
- Genetic kidney diseases
- Kidney stones
- Urinary tract infections
- Abnormalities in the urine
- Growth and developmental problems related to chronic kidney disease
Signs and Symptoms Kidney Problems in Childhood
- Fever
- Edema (swelling around the eyes, face, feet, or ankles)
- A burning sensation or pain when urinating
- More frequent urination
- Difficulty controlling urination in a child old enough to use the toilet
- Nighttime bedwetting in children who do not normally wet the bed anymore at night
- Blood in the urine
- High blood pressure
In order to diagnose suspected kidney disease, a pediatric urologist will take your child’s medical history, perform a physical examination, and order a urine test, blood tests, and possibly imaging studies or a kidney biopsy.
An important part of the physical exam is checking blood pressure and growth. High blood pressure or growth problems in children can indicate an acute or chronic kidney disorder.
