High-Risk Pregnancy Care
The neonatology division of KIDZ Medical Services (KIDZ), also known as Critical Care Newborn Services (CCNS), is a South Florida-based group of trained medical professionals specializing in the medical care of newborns, especially premature or critically ill newborns. Our neonatology division consists of neonatologists, neonatal advanced practice nurses, and physician assistants, all highly educated and specially trained to care for newborns.
While your baby is in the hospital, a member of KIDZ Medical Services may provide healthcare for your baby. Each baby receives personalized attention from a specialized team to meet the needs of his or her specific condition. Our neonatology group may care for your baby in a variety of ways in the hospital.
In fact, you may meet with one of our neonatologists prior to your baby’s birth. Your obstetrician may ask for a neonatology prenatal consultation if he or she considers your pregnancy high risk or anticipates a premature delivery.
In the delivery room, a neonatal specialist from KIDZ may be in attendance to provide medical care for your baby in the case of a cesarean section, a high-risk pregnancy, a labor and delivery complication, a pre-term delivery, or if the baby has a medical condition.
The responsibilities of a neonatologist may include:
- Consult with obstetricians, pediatricians, and family physicians about conditions affecting newborn infants
- Provide care to the newborn at a cesarean or vaginal delivery if the baby may require medical intervention, including resuscitation
- Assess and manage the medical care of normal newborn births
- Coordinate care and medically manage (diagnose and treat) newborns who are in the newborn (neonatal) intensive care unit (NICU) because they were born premature, critically ill, with birth defects, or in need of surgery
- Ensure that critically ill newborns receive the proper nutrition for healing and growth
- Medically manage newborns and act as team leader during neonatal transport (ground and air) from one facility to another
Newborn Services
The neonatology group may care for your baby in the newborn nursery or in the newborn intensive care unit (NICU).
In the newborn nursery, the KIDZ specialist may act as the general pediatrician, providing newborn evaluation and care. Sometimes, your pediatrician will consult with the neonatology group if a concern arises.
If your baby is in the NICU, the neonatologist will be the healthcare team leader for your baby. The neonatologist will manage your baby's medical treatment and coordinate with the NICU team that will take care of your baby.
Potential members of this team can be nurses, specialized doctors, advanced practice nurses, physician assistants, respiratory therapists, occupational and physical therapists, social workers, and YOU, the most important member of your baby’s healthcare team!
Hospital-Based Services
Our neonatologists are hospital-based medical providers, which means that KIDZ will not continue to provide medical care after your baby is discharged from the hospital. It is important for you to choose a pediatrician and make a follow-up appointment with that physician before your baby leaves the hospital.
